Police and fire investigation officials have stated that they suspect the blaze at the derelict Wednesfield High School site was arson.
The Lakefield Road site which was home to the old school campus went up in flames on Sunday 21st September.
The fire service was notified of smoke coming from the building around 6:15pm and the fire quickly took hold, gutting much of the old school hall, before fire fighters were able to stop it spreading to further buildings.
Pupils attending the new Wednesfield High School site were unaffected by the fire.
Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, who is a governor at the school, said he was saddened that the fire could be arson.
He said: “I’m speechless in all honestly. The school building was part of Wednesfield and part of its history. We don’t know why anyone would want to set fire to it but it is upsetting that this is arson.
“A lot of people have fond memories of that building and the school and someone has come along and set fire to it. I have no idea why”.
Wolverhampton City Council were already planning to demolish the site within the next few months and dispose of the land by 2016.
