Sporting Heroes

Here in Wednesfield we have a rich and diverse community that has and does include some talented sportsmen and women. Whether they were born,  lived or schooled in the WV11 area they are our sporting  heroes. Find out more about them below….

Tessa Sanderson

Born in Jamaica but moved to Wolverhampton and attended Wood End Primary and then Ward’s Bridge High School here in Wednesfield. Tessa is a heptathlete and javelin thrower  who represented Team GB in 6 Olympics and competed in countless other competitions including World Cup and Commomwealth Games. Tessa won 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal across her career.

As of 2013 she is currently still the only British Woman to ever win a throwing Gold Medal.

Tessa set up the Tessa Sanderon foundation which is currently looking at ways to work to bring the historic Heath Town Baths building back into use and there is a housing estate named in her honour “Sanderson Park”  near the site of her old high school.

Kristian Thomas

Wednesfield born and raised, Kristian rose to local fame when he won a team Bronze Olympic medal  at the 2012 London Olympic although he’s competed with Team GB since at a junior level.

At the  2013 World Championships, he took a bronze in vault; it was also the first global medal ever won in vault by a British male gymnast.

Kristian is still working towards earning his place in the gymnasts team that will attend the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Wayne Jones

Wednesfield Darts player Wayne started his career in the British Darts Organisation in the late 1980s and reached the final of the British Open in 1990, He’s since gone on to play in many other competition and still competes proffessionally.

John Sleewenhoek should be there.Centre Half and Aston Villa legend. International football honours for England! Attended Wards Bridge Secondary Modern in Wednesfield.
