Wolverhampton City Council is launching an innovative campaign to find foster parents for 70 local children.

Spearheaded by Wolverhampton Fostering Service, the campaign demonstrates that people of all backgrounds have ‘got what it takes’ to foster children by featuring the experiences of five carers.

On the face of it, Nobi and Kelly, Dawn, James, Sudesh and Mandy – who all feature in the campaign posters – defy foster carer stereotypes. The one thing that unites them with the 200 plus foster carers across the city is their commitment to the children they care for.

Through the campaign, the council aims to tackle some of the myths that might be preventing more people from coming forward to foster children. People of all ages and backgrounds can do a brilliant job. You can foster at any age between 25 and 60. You don’t need to be in a relationship or married. You can be in a same sex relationship. You can be from any ethnic group. You don’t have to own your own home – and you don’t have to give up work.

As the campaign shows, there are only three qualifications for the job: a commitment to keeping children safe, a spare room – and a little love in your heart.”

Anyone who is interested in becoming a foster carer can find out more at a special information event being held on Wednesday 22 May, 2013, where they will be able to speak to existing foster families about their experiences. Members of the Fostering Team will also be on hand to talk about the role.

The event takes place at Bushbury Triangle Children’s Centre, Stanley Road, Bushbury, between 9.30am and 9pm, and refreshments and a crèche are also available. Places in the crèche should be booked in advance.

Alternatively, people can find out more about by calling the Fostering Team on 01902 551133 or by logging on towww.wolverhampton.gov.uk/fostering.

Find out more about Foster Care Fortnight by visiting www.fostering.net/could-you-foster.

We’re encouraging wednesfield residents – and indeed to the whole of Wolverhampton to sign up to www.streetbank.com - the free sharing website whose aim is to bring communities together.

By signing up to Streetbank you can find people in your area with things to give away, skills to share and items to to lend. From lawn mowers and ladders to cooking lessons and web support you can find someone to help online, set your distance, find your neighbours and get connected.

FAQ from Streetbank

So what’s all this then?

Streetbank is a site that helps you share and borrow things from your neighbours. Streetbank is meant for everyone. It is not for private benefit – for individuals to make a profit or professionals to sell their services. It is for the common good. Of course, you may already share things with your neighbours, in which case, don’t let us stop you!

But why would I want to do that?

Well since you ask, communities that help each other are closer, nicer, and friendlier to live in. Streetbank can help make your neighbourhood a nicer place.

How do I start?

Sign up with your name and postcode (or address if you live outside of the UK), add one item, skill or recommendation and see all the items within one mile radius of your home. It’s all completely free and you can cancel your account at any time if you don’t like it.

In fact, it’s so great we suggest you sign up now

West Midlands Police are appealing for information after a Wednesfield betting shop was targeted by masked raiders on Grand National day.

The two robbers forced their way into Corals bookmakers on Blackhalve Lane in Wednesfield just after 8pm on Saturday 6 April.

West Midlands Police have release the following statement:

One attacker, armed with what is described as a hand gun, threatened staff and demanded they hand over the takings while his chubby accomplice acted as a lookout.

Video footage shows the thief drop cash on the floor as he attempts to stash the stolen money in his pockets.

His portly partner in crime picks up the bundled cash, but as they flee the bookies they leave a trail of cash behind.

One robber is described by the victim as chunky and was wearing a distinctive grey tracksuit. They were both wearing balaclavas.

Police have also released a CCTV image of a car which was seen to drive into the bookmakers car park shortly before the robbery and leave shortly after. Officers believe that this may have been the getaway car.

Detective Constable Emily Sparkes, from Wolverhampton CID, said: “We believe that the pair decided to attack the bookies thinking that on Grand National day the takings would be extremely high…. in fact because of a 66-1 Grand National winner the overall takings were meagre.

“We are appealing to anyone that can help us identify robbers or the car to come forward.”

Anyone with information which may help DC Emily Sparkes with her investigation should call police on 101. Alternatively, people who do not want to speak with police officers directly can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

As previously reported, Children’s Centres in Wolverhampton have been revealed to be under threat as Government funding to the city is cut.

Parents have set up an online petition to the government, asking them to reconsider the cuts. You can sign the petition here.

A Wolverhampton Council statement and consultation says “the Government is reducing the amount Wolverhampton receives through the Early Intervention Grant. The Early Intervention Grant is used to fund Wolverhampton’s 17 children’s centres. This means the city council faces having to make savings of £1.5M from children’s centres”.

The council is asking for your input, which you can offer by completing this survey.

Wolverhampton is set to get the full official MONOPOLY treatment with its very own customised board, which will be out later this year in time for Christmas. And it will be the great Wolverhampton public who will get to vote for the 22 property landmarks that make it onto the board.

So, for example, Wulfruna Street could replace Mayfair from the original London MONOPOLY. Or Molineux Stadium could appear on Old Kent Road!

Nominations for landmarks and famous streets (as well as general suggestions) can be left in the comments on this post and we’ll pass them on.

The board will see Wolverhampton’s finest landmarks swap places with the famous MONOPOLY London sites like Trafalgar Square and Oxford Street. In addition, the four London train stations will be handed over to a city ‘travel’ theme.

Some of the Community Chest and Chance cards are being customised too, with very bold plans for one to say ‘You will be fined for going to Birmingham’!

The Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Mrs Christine Mills, a self-confessed MONOPOLY fan who plays using the dog counter attended the launch event at the band stand in West Park today.

Councillor Mills said: “MONOPOLY is a classic game for all the family and it’s fantastic news that, nearly 80 years after it was first launched, the great and greater Wolverhampton public will be able to expand their property empire by snapping up some famous landmarks in Wolverhampton!”.

The new MONOPOLY: Wolverhampton Edition will be available from this October in time for Christmas – very extensively online and at all good toy and book stores – including at: Amazon.co.uk, Ocado, Toys R Us, Waitrose, Waterstones, WH Smith and The Works.

Nominations for landmarks and famous streets (as well as general suggestions) can be left in the comments on this post and we’ll pass them on.

Local cycle speedway club Wednesfield Aces are going from strength to strength with the introduction of a new team dubbed the ‘Wednesfield Dragons’.

The Dragons, born from the success of last season’s Midland League where the Wednesfield Aces won both divisions are a new team made up of talented young riders being given an opportunity to compete at the highest Midland level.

The 2013 season will see the Wednesfield Dragons compete against the Aces, along with other Midland clubs in division 1 and it is hoped that the Dragons will help develop young riders, giving them an opportunity to ride at much higher standard.

Currently new jerseys and logos are being designed by IMP Sport where a leading Midlands leading recruitment firm have stepped in with the funding.

First4Staff with branches in Wolverhampton, Cannock and Telford specialise in the supply skilled and unskilled labour to the manufacturing, engineering and logistics have sponsored local football clubs in the past, however nothing on this scale.

Jason Guy – Managing Director was approached and negotiations set in place after last seasons charity cycle speedway event for Balls to Cancer where Mr Guy competed and fell in love with the sport. Jason, a lifetime Wolves fan and keen sportsman was thrilled by the opportunity.

The sponsorship deal will see Wednesfield Dragons sporting a new look kit with First4Staff branding and using the recruitment firms corporate colours.
