As the nights draw in and summer ends, the emphasis shifts at the farm. The maize maze is now closed and will soon be feeding our cattle. If you visited it this summer we hope you enjoyed it. We will shortly be making the draw for the prize to see Aladdin at the Grand Theatre, but as we say goodbye to the maze October brings its own events.

The pumpkins and squashes are ripening nicely and we hope to make a start on harvesting them this weekend. As well as making lanterns, try our lovely edible squashes, onion squash (looks like an onion, doesn’t taste like one!), little gem, and crown prince. The pumpkin season will climax at hallowe’en and our October craft fair on 24 Oct. Be sure to pay us a visit but please book in advance if you want a table for lunch!

Butchery offer!

We try to have a special bargain on our butchery most weeks and this week we are offering matured silverside at 20% off until Sunday 3.00pm! We will also be serving it on the Sunday carvery so you could try it first!

At last the pick-your-own season has started!

We have lots of lovely strawberries, the recent rains have swollen them nicely and plenty are now ripening up. Other fruit crops will soon follow: gooseberries may be picked now but will benefit from a week or two to grow some more, raspberries and currants should be ready by the end of the month.

We also have lots of fresh vegetables ready now: cabbage and broccoli are ready at the moment, with caulis not far behind. We have beetroot, lettuce and sugar peas ready now, with traditional garden peas coming on shortly. Spinach is just starting.

Essington Fruit Farm have a charity event coming up this weekend….

“Every May we open our beautiful bluebell woods in aid of our Charity of the Year, which this year is “Air Ambulance”. Usually this takes place on the May Day weekend but, like everything else this year, the bluebells are a little bit late so we look forward to welcoming you this weekend:

Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th May, 10.30am – 4.00pm

You can stroll at your leisure through a typically old English bluebell wood. The walk is approximately a half an hour stroll, and a suggested donation to the charity is £2 per person. Please wear suitable footwear.”

Essington Fruit Farm is just down the road from us here in WV11, and in fact although it’s classed as South Staffs, it still has a WV11 prefix.

I’m lucky enough to live close enough to be able to cycle over with my little one, we love the place so when I saw an article in the Express and Star highlighting what a good crop they’ve yielded this year I thought I’d remind people of this little gem on our doorstep.

It is a lovely place for young and old alike to pick their own fruit and veg, (or cheat and buy the shop) and well worth a visit if you have the time.
