Following our news stories in February and March which highlighted problems with a set of derelict garages in Ashmore Park, we can now reveal that Wolverhampton Homes (the organisation, which manages Wolverhampton City Council’s homes, shops and garages) is taking legal action against a former tenant who is refusing to vacate the garages on Griffiths Drive.

Mark Henderson, Director of House for Wolverhampton Homes told us:

“Wolverhampton Homes is taking legal action against a former tenant who is refusing to vacate the garages at Griffiths Drive, behind Ashmore Park, in Wolverhampton.

The row of near-derelict garages has been an eyesore for people living and working nearby for three years. During that time Wolverhampton Homes has helped all the previous tenants find new garages to let and served notice that the garages are to be demolished.

We have written to the remaining illegal occupant advising that we are requesting a court order to take possession of the garages. Despite repeated contact and offers to let similar garages just minutes away, the former tenant has not responded.

If the request for a court order is successful, the illegal occupant will be evicted, and the garages will be demolished. It is dependent on the court order when the demolition could take place.

Wolverhampton Homes will consult with local people and businesses about the future use of the site, but one suggestion is to establish free parking spaces for residents and shoppers.”

The Express and Star looks at the current success of Wednesfield’s Bentley Bridge Retail Park in this recent article.

As previously reported, national chain Cosmo is due to open it’s new Pan Asian restaurant next month which will serve food from China, Japan and Mongolia, creating 38 jobs.

JD Sports is also rumoured to be on the verge of snapping up an empty unit on the retail park, bringing more jobs to the area and becoming the 2nd sports retailer on the park.

With other units recently being filled by AMF Bowling Alley, Aldi supermarket, Pure Gym, and Just For Pets (which opens on 25th March), it would seem that Bentley Bridge is finally beginning to live up to it’s potential as a retail park worth leaving the city centre to visit, 5 years after it opened.

Let’s hope this trend continues!

As you are all probably aware the 4 year long legal wrangle between Dave Price, of David Price butchers of Ashmore Park, and Wolverhampton Homes over the sale of hot pork baps from his shop has been settled, with Wolverhampton Homes deciding to relent in their pursuit of a court hearing and dropping the case against Dave.

We spoke to Dave the day after he heard the news from his solicitors and he was relieved to be able to put the ordeal behind him:

“The support I’ve had from the people of Ashmore Park has been fantastic – I just want to be able to get on with things and earn a living now as it’s been hanging over me for so long. Hopefully now I, along with the other shopkeepers in the precinct can work together to to serve Ashmore Park and the wider community as intended”

Dave went on to tell us of his plans to thank the community that rallied behind him, of which he is a popular long serving member, by selling his now infamous pork baps for a limited period at the reduced price of only £1.

So what are you waiting for – get down to David Price Butchers, 70 Griffiths Drive, Ashmore Park (or for the locals – the bottom shops) to pick yourself up a porky treat!

Down the at the “bottom shops” (anyone local to Ashmore Park will know what that means for everyone else it’s the larger of Ashmore Park’s shopping precincts) is a craft store. When I was little I always knew it as “the wool shop” as that was where my Nan used to get her knitting supplies – and for years it was really called “Prima Crafts”, but not any more….

… In the last few months it has welcomed a new owner Lyndsey Turner and with her comes a new name “Lora Crafts”.

It will still be stocking the wool I remember going in to buy as a child and most of the usual craft related items but Lyndsay will also be hunting down, and stocking, a large range of new lines – and holding classes and regular craft events to show everyone how to get the most out of them.

To celebrate the festive season and to encourage you to get your crafty fingers out Lyndsay is offering all WV11 readers a 10% discount – all you need to do is drop by the shop and mention our website when you make a purchase.
