Wolverhampton Central Mosque evacuated

Wolverhampton Central Mosque has been evacuated as a result of investigations into recent attacks near mosques in Walsall and Tipton.

Wolverhampton Central Mosque has been evacuated and nearby roads closed as a result of urgent enquiries underway as part of the investigation into the attacks near mosques in Walsall and Tipton.

A Police press release states information has been received regarding a possible device activation on 28 June at Wolverhampton Central Mosque, Waterloo Road, Wolverhampton.

This new information has resulted in an evacuation of the mosque and the surrounding area at around 8 pm this evening (Thursday 18 July). This measure is in place to ensure the absolute safety and security of our communities.

A number of specialist and local police officers are at the scene and a military bomb disposal team is en route.

Searches and checks will take place throughout this evening. Updates will follow.

A number of road closures are in place:

  • Gorsebrook Road at Stafford Road
  • Waterloo Road at Oxley Street
  • Stafford Road at Cannock Road
  • Dunstall Road at Staveley Road
  • Cannock Road at Crown Street

Update at 10pm, 18th July

Cordons in place have been reduced with Five Ways island now at the centre of a 20m cordon and the following roads closed around it:

  • Foxes Lane
  • Dunstall Avenue
  • Dunstall Hill
  • Dunstall Road
  • Waterloo Road
  • North Road
