One of Wednesfield’s most iconic pubs, the Pyle Cock in is set to close and be redeveloped as a care home.
Local blog Come The Revolution reports that Banks’ have sold the Rookery Street pub which has been for sale for some time.
Plans have been submitted to Wolverhampton City Council to turn the building into a care home by demolishing part of the existing building and extending it at the rear (where there is a large car park).
Is this a devastating blow to Wednesfield’s heritage & drinking culture, or do you think a care home will better serve ourĀ ageing population?

I’m actually extremely upset about this.. My grandparents were the actual last owners of it before they retired and had to give it up.. All of my childhood memories were in there and now to find out it will be changed completely moves me quite a lot..
It would be nice to have one more walk round before it goes for ever I remember it being very traditional inside these kind of old pubs are dieing fast

The Pyle Cock brings back many memories to me when I was young and I lived in Hall Street opposite there. Bert Hargreaves was the proprietor then. When leaving school I worked at the Corn Shop a few yards away from the pub. When I wanted to know the time I used to check by looking through a gap between the Pyle Cock and the little cottages where I could see the Church Clock which was always “dead right”
Like Mark and Cal Fellows I too would like the last look at the Pyle Cock because when it’s gone it’s gone.
